By 2020, you’ll use recycled wastewater in Abu Dhabi

  DUBAI – In three years, Abu Dhabi will be using 100 percent recycled wastewater, according to a newspaper report, quoting an official of Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD). The move is part of the emirate’s groundwater conservation efforts, with overall Abu Dhabi’s groundwater level reported as having “continuously declined” over the last decade, according to the latest Environment Report by EAD. “Over the last decade, the emirate’s overall groundwater level has continuously declined, particularly in the Eastern Region. The sustainability of the emirate’s precious groundwater resources is one of the greatest sustainability challenges that the UAE faces,” according to the report. Abu Dhabi generates more than 460,000 cubic meters of waste water each year, and currently reuses only five percent of its treated wastewater, according to EAD. “The government has put in plans to recycle and reuse all waste water by 2020 and we aim not to lose a drop of waste water,” Gulf News quoted EAD’s Water Resources Advisor Mohammad Dawoud as saying on Monday. Majority of the emirate’s water supply comes from groundwater, which makes up 60 percent of its total water usage, and desalinated water, which makes up 35 percent, according to EAD. “Our future plan is to increase the re-use of treated waste water. More than 360,000 cubic metres of treated waste water will be recycled and reused to replace the use of ground and desalinated water,” Dawoud said. He said that three projects are underway to recycle treated wastewater in the emirate.
