A woman in Abu Dhabi has been fined Dh250,000 for insulting another woman via social media, and ordered to pay Dh30,000 in damages in a separate civil lawsuit. In the recent civil case ruling by the Abu Dhabi Family, Civil and Administrative Cases Court, the court found that the defendant had posted offensive comments on photos, videos, and in private messages that caused both moral and material harm to the complainant. The case followed a separate criminal case filed against the defendant where the court convicted her of defamation via a social media platform. In that ruling, the defendant was fined Dh250,000, and the court also ordered the confiscation of the devices used in the offense and deletion of offensive content. The complainant later filed a civil lawsuit, seeking Dh150,000 in compensation. While the court did not grant the full amount, it ruled in her favor and awarded Dh30,000 for the harm suffered. The court stressed that the conviction in the criminal case served as sufficient grounds for the civil compensation.
