Abu Dhabi: Woman ordered to pay Dh10,000 for insulting her ex-husband via email

The Abu Dhabi Court of Appeal upheld a first ruling which required a woman to pay Dh10,000 to her ex-husband in compensation for the damages he incurred after she insulted him in an e-mail. The case began when the husband filed a lawsuit demanding his ex-wife to pay him Dh100,000 in material and moral compensation, apart from the legal expenses. According to the complainant, his wife, with whom he had two sons, allegedly traveled with one of his kids and returned over a year later, after which she sent him insults by e-mail. The Abu Dhabi Court for Family, Civil and Administrative Cases ordered the appellee to pay Dh10,000 to the complainant, besides the fees and expenses, so the two parties appealed the ruling. The complainant appealed that the compensation amount did not suit the damages he incurred because the insult harmed his reputation, religion, and social and work environment. The ex-wife also appealed that what her ex-husband presented was a preliminary verdict and that she denied the insulting incident. She also claimed that the writing style showed that the message was fake. She asked to dismiss the case for the lack of merit and evidence. She also requested a reduction in the allowance because she was unemployed. The court confirmed that the insulting message contained contempt for the applicant, indicating that the insult had caused him harm.
