Abu Dhabi worker hit by pump gets Dh250,000 compensation

An Abu Dhabi worker who was severely injured after being hit by a falling pump has been awarded Dh250,000 in compensation. The Abu Dhabi Court of Appeals upheld the verdict by the lower court granting him compensation for physical, moral and material damages he suffered following the incident. The worker was repairing the pump when it fell on him, causing multiple fractures to his spine and ribs. He sued the company and demanded Dh500,000 in damages. Investigations confirmed that the accident resulted from the company's negligence and lack of safety measures to protect the workers. A separate criminal case was filed against the company’s owner, who was found guilty of negligence and flouting safety rules. The company owner was fined Dh10,000 and ordered to pay Dh60,000 compensation to the worker. The worker also filed a civil lawsuit against the company owner to demand compensation, saying that the injuries have resulted in him not being able to stand for a prolonged period, affecting his ability to work as the family’s sole breadwinner. The Abu Dhabi Civil Court of First Instance ruled that the company owner pay Dh250,000 in damages. The company owner appealed the verdict, but lost his appeal. He will be paying the worker Dh250,000 in compensation as well as the worker’s legal expenses. ICA/Expat Media
