  CEBU CITY – A stronghold of the terrorist group Abu Sayyaf has fallen in Basilan, with government troops clearing the camp in one of the military’s biggest victory in the continuing war against the terror group. The rebel camp was fortified with bunkers, tunnels and foxholes at Hill 355 in Barangay Silangkum, Tipo-Tipo in Basilan, said troops from the Joint Task Force (JTF) Basilan who led the operation on Monday (August 15). Troops seized two improvised explosive devices in the camp that had ten bunkers, four tunnels and several foxholes. The bunkers measured 4x4x5 feet that can be occupied by about seven people, while the tunnels could fit 20 people and the foxholes could be occupied by 8 people, the military said, adding that they also discovered one exit post in the camp. The camp was then declared clear by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team. Troops in nearby Barangay Baguindan, Tipo-Tipo, were also on alert. Troops also seized and controlled strategic strongholds of the Abu Sayyaf Group in Barangay Baguindan Proper and at Hill 440 (Kawilan Hill). The terrain was used by Abu Sayyaf as a gateway to nearby communities. The combined assault from the Special Forces, other elite counter terrorism units, and Light Armor Cavalry Troops, with support from massive artillery fires, forced rebels to abandon their stronghold, which was fortified with seven foxholes and 12 bunkers capable of accommodating at least 80 people. Military troops recovered three unexploded ordnances and several improvised bombs.

Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Bacala, Jr., Commanding Officer of the 4TH Special Forces Battalion, said the ensuing operations that led to the capture of the Abu Sayyaf strongholds liberated the populace of Baguindan, Tipo-Tipo and Bohe Piang of Al-Barka. Since last month, operating troops of the Joint Task Force Basilan have reached strategic communities in the operational area, extending to three municipalities. The troops were able to harness popular support and effectively earned the trust of the local populace to support the ongoing military operations. With the help of the local government units from the municipalities of Albarka, Akbar, Tuburan, Maluso, Lantawan and Hadji Mutamad (Pilas), the troops became effective in their operations. After troops from the JTF Basilan were deployed, reports on Abu Sayyaf’s diminishing supplies surfaced as communities refute the enemy of resources and rally their support to the government troops.
