Accident in Dubai as dust storm persists

DUBAI – At least one traffic accident was reported in Dubai on Sunday as strong winds continued to kick up dust and sand. The Dubai Police reported an accident on Al Khail Road after the Umm Suqeim bridge, towards Business Bay crossing. The police cautioned motorists to "drive carefully", as “blowing dust and dirt may cause poor visibility". Sandstorms were also reported in Ajman, where a sandstorm reduced visibility on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road. Strong winds blowing at 50km/hr in Dubai, Sharjah and Fujairah also sparked the weather bureau to issue a warning. The National Centre of Meteorology said the UAE is currently experiencing the Shammal season, when north-northwesterly winds blow across the country. “The shammal winds are coming from Saudi Arabia, which brings the dust into the UAE," the weather bureau said, adding it is not certain how long the winds will last. The NCM said unstable weather in the UAE is forecast to remain until Tuesday, but will generally be hot and hazy.
