High-tech drug rehab facility to be constructed in Bohol as number of drug dependents soar

  CEBU CITY – A state-of-the-art rehabilitation center for drug dependents will be constructed in Bohol to accommodate the country's growing number of suspected drug dependents who have voluntarily surrendered to authorities. In Bohol alone, the number of drug dependents who surrendered to police has already reached 31,000 "and more are still coming", said Bohol Philippine National Police Chief Felipe Natividad. "We don't just need medical staff here; but also provincial trainors, peer councilors, peer facilitators, recovery coaches, among others," said Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Mita Tecson. To address the problem, Bohol Governor Edgar Chatto has been pushing for the construction of the Centre for Drug Addiction and Counseling in the province, saying it will have the latest equipment and professional staff needed in handling delicate cases. The facility will occupy a floor area of 2,777 sqm and will have a 200-bed initial capacity. The rehab centre will initially accept 150 patients, including 100 men and 50 women. The patients will be given a six-month treatment and will undergo a "boot camp" to address their addiction to alcohol, smoking or substance abuse. Dr. Em-em Uy clarified that the rehab center's recommended therapeutic activities would only include psychotherapy, counseling, individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, community work projects, sheltered workshop, and social reintegration. "The center shall be exclusively for the treatment and rehabilitation of drug dependents and shall not provide services to patients with primary psychotic behavior," she said. Dr. Uy pointed out that families need not fear for their loved ones' safety for the center would be adequately secured to ensure safety from outside intrusion and to prevent escapes and ensure a drug-free environment. She added that a fence or barriers will be put up around the area and that visitors will be properly screened and controlled where a system of searching for dangerous drugs and items must be clearly documented and implemented. Meanwhile, Governor Chatto is mulling an inter-agency provincial team to help implement an intervention program for suspected drug dependents.
