Agot-Enchong posts on official's wedding draw mixed reactions from netizens

MANILA – Agot Isidro and Enchong Dee drew mixed reactions from netizens after the actors posted social media comments criticizing the wedding of a congresswoman representing public utility transport drivers in the Philippines. Congresswoman Claudine Bautista reportedly donned a gown by renowned Dubai-based fashion Michael Cinco during her “lavish, peony-filled ceremony in Balesin”, a private, upscale island in the Philippines where she wed businessman Jose French Lim this month. “That gown alone can feed hundred of families of displaced drivers ,” Agot tweeted. Bautista represents the Drivers United for Mass Progress and Equal Rights party list. Enchong Dee, on the other hand, accused Bautista of corruption. "The money for commuters and drivers went to her wedding. Let’s not prolong this conversation and don’t say otherwise," Enchong said in his now deleted post. Comedians Pokwang and Ogie Diaz also criticized Bautista for her costly gown and wedding ceremony. The comments from the actors drew mixed reactions from netizens, with some agreeing that showing off the lavish wedding was “insensitive” during the pandemic. “Kung pinakain mo sana sa mga kawawang drivers ang halaga ng wedding gown mo, marami pa sana ang natuwa sayo! (If only you used the money you spent on your wedding gown on the poor drivers, many people would be happy for you)” said Alona Dela Cuesta. However, many disagreed with the actors, saying they have no right to dictate how Bautista should spend money on a personal event. “She every single right to spend for her wedding as long as from her pocket,” said Shenzi Marie on social media. Facebook user Ko Khin also wrote to defend Bautista. “Her maternal grandparents are actually very rich. Like insanely rich. They have a lot of businesses and sources of income even before she ran for the office. She came from money and so does Tracker Lim, the husband. The Lim family owns majority (if not all) of the Toyota franchises in Mindanao, amongst other businesses,” Khin said, adding that the wedding is “small change” for the family. Several netizens questioned Agot and Enchong for attacking Bautista on how much she spent on her own wedding. “You should post how much you have donated to the people so we know every detail,” Fe Villota Sabay challenged the actors in Filipino. Some netizens pointed out that Bautista was one of 70 Congress members who voted to trash TV network ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal application. Agot, Enchong and Ogie are stars of ABS-CBN, while Pokwang was a former ABS-CBN talent. CAM/Expat Media
