Air Arabia lays off more staff due to Covid-19 impact

  DUBAI – Sharjah-based airline Air Arabia announced more job cuts on Wednesday (June 3) due to the economic effects of the coronavirus. It did not say how many employees had been affected by the latest layoffs. The airline laid off 57 employees in May. A spokesman said the latest job cuts were a “last alternative” after the airline took measures in the past months to keep jobs. Air Arabia had about 2,000 employees. It had operated limited flights since passenger flights were grounded in March. The airline has reported a profit loss of 45 percent in the first quarter of the year due to a dip in travel demand amid the coronavirus pandemic. Airlines around the world have suffered losses and implemented job cuts to stay afloat during the pandemic. On Sunday, Emirates airline confirmed it is cutting jobs after months of trying to avoid layoffs. “The current pandemic has impacted many industries around the world and although we have endeavored to sustain the current family as is, we reviewed all possible scenarios in order to sustain our business operations, but have come to the conclusion that we unfortunately have to say goodbye to a few of the wonderful people that worked with us,” the airline said in a statement carried by the Dubai Government media office.
