Single-use plastic bags are now banned in shops and malls across Ajman, the Ajman Municipality has announced. The decision takes effect this month in compliance with the federal law aimed at reducing or eliminating the UAE’s plastic waste. "By implementing this decision, Ajman aims to contribute to environmental conservation and waste reduction," according to Ajman Municipality. The municipality is encouraging businesses and consumers to "adopt sustainable practices by utilizing alternatives to single-use plastic bags." Ajman’s decision follows similar moves from neighbouring emirates such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi. On January 1, Dubai began a ban on single-use plastic bags, and also announced a Dh200 fine for violators. The ban in Dubai will be implemented in three phases, with phase two to take effect in January 2025 and covering single-use plastic products. ICA/Expat Media
