Al Ain chef loses Dh59,000 lawsuit vs sponsor over passport

A chef in Al Ain has lost his lawsuit against his sponsor in which he demanded Dh59,000 in compensation for his passport that was allegedly withheld. The Al Ain Court of First Instance rejected the lawsuit for lack of evidence. In his lawsuit, the chef claimed that his employer refused to hand over his passport and Emirates ID. He previously filed a labour case against his employer for non-payment of salaries. He said that despite a ruling from the labour court, his employer did not pay his dues and also did not return his passport and Emirates ID. He said that this caused him material and moral damages since he had been unable to work for another employer and could not settle his legal status in the country. The court, in its ruling, said that the chef did not provide evidence that his passport was in the possession of his employer, who denied receiving the man’s passport. In the UAE, it is prohibited for any person or company to confiscate someone's passport, unless there is consent in writing from the passport holder. ICA/Expat Media
