Filipina tennis star Alex Eala is not done making noise in Dubai. The 20-year-old continued her dream run at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Wednesday (February 18), defeating Romanian veteran Sorana Cirstea 7-5, 6-4 under the lights of Centre Court. The win sends Eala into the quarterfinals on Thursday (February 19), where she will face World No. 4 Coco Gauff in what promises to be a thrilling showdown. “I take it all in with a spoonful of gratitude,” Eala said after the match, as Filipino fans waved flags and posters in a packed Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium. Currently ranked World No. 47, the highest-ranked Filipina in WTA history, Eala showed poise beyond her years. The first set stayed on serve through 10 games before she broke Cirstea for a 6-5 lead and calmly closed it out. In the second set, she rode the crowd’s energy to maintain control and seal the win in one hour and 38 minutes. The atmosphere was electric. Cheers erupted after every winner. Handmade signs filled the stands, including one that read, “Alex, please marry my son.” The umpire repeatedly reminded spectators to stay quiet during points. Eala acknowledged the crowd’s impact but stayed grounded. “Obviously their support means a lot to me. It definitely motivated me in the tight moments and makes the emotions more intense when I win, but I wouldn't attribute all of it to them. Whether they’re there or not, I'm going to fight until the end and do what I can to win,” she said. She added that she has learned to compete in all kinds of environments. “I've been playing tennis for many years and I'm also used to playing in front of no crowds. I'm still in the earlier phase of my career, so I'm doing my best to enjoy and I hope the feeling is reciprocated by the crowd. It just creates an amazing atmosphere.” Looking ahead to her clash with Gauff, Eala is embracing the challenge. “Win or lose, it's a great opportunity for me to learn. Obviously facing a player like Coco is something that people would kill to do — and in a quarterfinal here in Dubai as well, so I'm super excited.” The 26th edition of the tournament runs until February 21.
