Filipina tennis star Alex Eala wrapped up a landmark campaign at the Dubai Tennis Championships on Thursday (February 19), after reaching the quarterfinals in her tournament debut. The 20-year-old bowed out following a 6-0, 6-2 loss to World No. 4 Coco Gauff, but her run in Dubai marked one of the strongest performances of her young career so far. Eala became one of the youngest players to reach the last eight of the WTA 1000 event in Dubai, earning three consecutive victories against higher-ranked opponents. She began her campaign with a win over Hailey Baptiste before upsetting World No. 8 Jasmine Paolini in straight sets. The result marked her third career win over a top-10 player. In the Round of 16, Eala defeated Sorana Cîrstea 7-5, 6-4 under the Centre Court lights, ending the Romanian’s seven-match winning streak and setting up a high-profile clash against Gauff. The quarterfinal meeting was also the first singles encounter between Eala and Gauff after they previously teamed up as doubles partners at the Italian Open last year. Although Gauff’s experience proved decisive, the atmosphere inside the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium told its own story. Filipino fans filled the stands, creating one of the loudest crowds of the week. “I know you were mostly supporting Alex. But I have to say, it is great to be on a crowded court,” Gauff said after the match. “Whenever you guys were cheering for Alex, I was pretending that it was my name. And I think that it helped me a lot. If you can’t beat them, you’ve got to join them,” she added with a laugh. Eala exited Centre Court to loud cheers, her Dubai run signaling her steady rise on the women’s tour.
