Filipina tennis star Alexandra “Alex” Eala is set to make her debut at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, and she arrives as one of the hottest rising stars on the WTA Tour. Tournament organisers confirmed that the 20-year-old entered the world’s Top 40 this week, marking a major career milestone ahead of her first appearance at Dubai’s prestigious WTA 1000 event, which runs from February 15 to 21 at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium. Eala’s rise has been rapid. Just 12 months ago, she was ranked No. 139 in the world. A string of strong performances has propelled her up the rankings, including a semi-final finish in Auckland, quarterfinal runs in Manila and Abu Dhabi, and her main-draw debut at the Australian Open earlier this season. She also claimed the Kooyong Classic exhibition title in Melbourne. Although she exited early in Doha after a 7(6), 6-1 loss to Tereza Valentova on Monday (February 9), Dubai presents an immediate opportunity to bounce back and to test her improving game against the very best in women’s tennis. This year’s Dubai field is among the strongest in the tournament’s 26-year history. Eighteen of the world’s top 20 players are expected to compete, including World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, multiple Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek, reigning Australian Open winner Elena Rybakina, American star Coco Gauff, and defending champion Mirra Andreeva. Only injured players Madison Keys and Naomi Osaka are missing from the Top 20 lineup. For fans in the UAE and the Filipino community, Eala’s participation adds extra excitement to an already stacked tournament. The women’s WTA 1000 event will be followed by the 34th edition of the ATP 500 men’s tournament from February 23 to 28, completing two weeks of world-class tennis in Dubai.
