After visiting the flood victims, Hollywood actress and philanthropist Angelina Jolie called for more international aid and said the flood disaster in Pakistan should serve as a "wake-up call" about climate change. According to the most recent government statistics, Pakistan has been hit by unprecedented monsoon downpours that have flooded a third of the nation, an area the size of the United Kingdom, killing nearly 1,600 people. More than seven million people have been displaced, many living in makeshift tents without mosquito protection and often with little access to clean drinking water or washing facilities. In a video released on Thursday, Jolie, who had previously traveled to Pakistan, said, "I've never seen anything like this." "I am absolutely with you in pushing the international community to do more... I think this is a real wake-up call to the world about where we are, " Jolie said. "Climate change is not only real and it's not only coming, it's very much here." Jolie, a representative for the UNHCR, met with displaced flood victims residing in camps. Malnutrition, as well as infections including dengue, malaria, cholera, and diarrhea, have been predicted by the UN as a "second disaster." BKM/ Expat Media
