'La La Land' announced as winner when it should have been 'Moonlight'

LOS ANGELES – Just like what happened in the 2015 Miss Universe when the wrong winner was announced, the same mistake marred the 89th Academy Awards when "La La Land" was announced best picture when it was actually "Moonlight." It was actress Faye Dunaway who announced that the musical won Best Picture. She read it from the envelope handed to her by co-presenter Warren Beatty. The two veteran stars were chosen as the Best Picture presenters because their 1967 movie "Bonnie and Clyde" marked its 50th anniversary this year since its release. Jordan Horowitz, producer of "La La Land", corrected the mistake and said it was "Moonlight" that won as he stressed that it was not a joke. Horowitz held up the envelope that had "Moonlight" as best picture. The audience was shocked and surprised by the turn of events. The cast and director of "Moonlight" promptly went up the stage at the Dolby Theater to receive the award from one of the producers of "La La Land." Beatty explained that he saw the name of Emma Stone on the envelope given to him, that's why it took for him to say who the winner was and he gave the envelope to Dunaway, who announced "La La Land" as the winner. Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel, reacting to the mistake amid the chaos on the stage, said: "I knew I would screw this show up. I really did." The error in the announcement of the Oscars best picture broke the Internet as evidenced by the flurry of tweets and posts on social media about what happened. "Moonlight", directed by Barry Jenkins, was about Chiron, a young African-American man growing up in Miami, and the movie took a look at three defining chapters of his life. Aside from best picture, the movie also won best supporting actor for Mahershala Ali and best adapted screenplay. Meanwhile, "La La Land" won awards for best director for Damien Chazelle, best actress for Emma Stone, best production design, best cinematography, best original score, best original song. Chazelle, 32, is the youngest person to win best director in Oscar history. Thus, the musical-love story won in six of the 14 categories it earned nominations for. The mix-up at the 2017 Oscars was very much like what happened during the 2015 Miss Universe pageant when host Steve Harvey announced Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez as winner when it should have been Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach. Here are the Oscars 2017 winners: Best performance by an actor in a supporting role – Mahershala Ali for Moonlight Best makeup and hairstyle – Suicide Squad Best costume – Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Best documentary feature – O.J.: Made in America Best sound editing - Arrival Best sound mixing – Hacksaw Ridge Best performance by an actress in a supporting role – Viola Davis for Fences Best foreign language film – The Salesman (Iran) directed by previous Oscar winner Asghar Farhadi Best animated short film – Piper Best animated feature – Zootopia Best production design – La La Land Best visual effects – The Jungle Book Best film editing – Hacksaw Ridge Best documentary short subject – The White Helmets Best live-action short film – Sing Best cinematography – La La Land Best original score – La Land Land Best original song – City of Stars from La Land Land Best original screenplay – Manchester By The Sea Best adapted screenplay – Moonlight Best director – Damien Chazelle for La La Land Best performance by an actor in a leading role - Casey Affleck for Manchester By The Sea Best performance by an actress in a leading role – Emma Stone for La La Land Best picture – 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
