Firms across the world report that their IT systems are down in cyberattack
MOSCOW - Unidentified hackers on Tuesday unleashed a malware that hit tech systems of companies across the world, particularly those in Russia and Ukraine.
Among the companies that have been hit by the cyberattack are British advertising agency WPP, which tweeted: "IT systems in several WPP companies have been affected by a suspected cyberattack."
Russian oil and gas giant Rosneft, American pharmaceutical company Merck and the Danish shipping company Maersk were also hit.
Merck said on Twitter "we confirm our company's computer network was compromised today as part of a global hack" while Maersk said their tech systems are down "across multiple sites and business units because of the cyberattack."
Tech systems of companies in France, Germany, Italy, Poland have also been reportedly hit.
The source of the new cyberattack is still being determined but it is similar to the WannaCry ransomware unleashed on computers around the world last May that restricted access to file by computer users and demanded for payment to regain access.
The malware used in the WannaCry cyberattack and the new onewere spread through a flaw in Windows operating system even if a patch for the flaw had been released in March.
Meanwhile, Russian cybersecurity firm Group IB said the Petya virus affected 80 companies in Russia and Ukraine. It infected and locked a computer and demanded payment of US$300 in Bitcoins to regain access.
Symantec said the ransomware used in Tuesday's cyberattack is a variant of Petya, a known malware but Kaspersky Lab said their initial findings indicate that the malware is a new one and they called it ExPetr.
Microsoft said the ransomware is using multiple techniques to infect tech systems and then spread across the globe. Further investigation is being conducted by the company.
Europol is also conductng an investigation.
The US Department of Homeland Security is monitoring the latest cyberattack and advised victims not to pay any ransom to regain access to their files because doing so does not guarantee they will be able to get hold of their files again while the US National Security Council said there was currently no risk to public safety.
"The United States was investigating the attack and determined to hold those responsible accountable," the council said.
