Vietnamese defendants had been convicted of stabbing a Pakistani man to death

  DUBAI – Two brothel-owners convicted by the criminal court last March of killing a man last year ended up having to serve three more years in jail after the Court of Appeal rejected their petition to have their prison term reduced. Both will be deported after serving their jail sentence. The criminal court had convicted the two Vietnamese men, who are in their early 30s, of facilitating prostitution and stabbing dead a Pakistani national at the Moroccan cluster of International City. Court records said that on July last year. the two defendants were distributing cards advertising massage and sex services at a flat in International City which they turned into a brothel. A Pakistani man availed of sex and massage service. A masseuse later complained that she had been harassed by the man, prompting the defendants to beat him up. The Pakistani man returned to the brothel with three fellow nationals and a fight ensued between them and the defendants. One of the defendants grabbed hold of a knife from one of the Pakistani men and stabbed the man who harrased a masseuse. The Vietnamese defendants and the Pakistani men were later arrested. The criminal court sentenced the Vietnamese defendants to thee years in jail while the Pakistani men were meted a two-month jail term and fined Dh2,000 for the assault. The Vietnamese defendants filed an appeal before the appellate tribunal to have their jail term reduced but prosecutors asked the court to impose a stiffer penalty on both the Vietnamese defendants and the Pakistani men. Court of Appeal presiding judge Eisa Al Sharif granted the prosecutors' plea and increased the jail terms of the Vietnamese defendants from three years to six years. The Pakistani defendants were referred to the Dubai Misdemeanours Court for jurisdictional reasons.
