Tribunal also upholds three-month jail sentence on defendant

  DUBAI – The Dubai Appeal Court has imposed a Dh500,000 fine and upheld a three-month prison sentence on a Jordanian student who was earlier charged with using profanity while stalking a female student In the incident that occurred in January, the 24-year-old defendant stalked a 23-year-old Jordanian female student, who was accompanied by a female friend, around the Dubai Academic City campus. The defendant approached the 23-year-old female student in one of the school's corridors and tried to hug her but she managed to avoid him. The incident prompted the female student's friend to call her fiance, who rushed to the scene. The fiance and the defendant got into a heated argument and used profane language at the female student. The defendant also threatened to have the female student jailed. A case was filed against the 24-year-old male student. The Dubai Court of First Instance ordered his imprisonment for three months as well as his deportation after serving his jail term. Prosecutors appealed the primary judgement before the Dubai Appeal Court and urged the appellate tribunal to fine the defendant for using profanity at the female student. The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and asked the appeal court to overturn his punishment and acquit him. Presiding Judge Ahmad Hassan however dismissed the defendant's appeal and approved the request of the prosecutors. Hassan imposed a Dh500,000 fine on the defendant and affirmed the latter's three-month jail sentence. The appellate court's decision is subject to appeal before the Cassation Court within 30 days.
