3 Emiratis, Jordanian convicted of robbing British tourist

  DUBAI – The Court of Appeal affirmed a two-year jail sentence meted on four men who broke into a villa where a British female tourist stayed and took her cash and valuables in October last year. The defendants – three Emiratis and a Jordanian and aged between 22 and 45 – were earlier convicted of armed robbery by the criminal court and sentenced to prison for two years. Court records showed that the 58-year-old tourist had just arrived in Dubai and was preparing to go to the place of her American friend in Mirdif. Meanwhile, the 45-year-old defendant drove his three accomplices to where the tourist was staying and waited in the car. Armed with swords, the three defendants barged into the tourist's villa and demanded that she hand over all of her money. One of the robbers complained that the Dh700 handed by the tourist was not enough so the robbers also took the tourist's bags that had gold and diamond jewelry, 23.60 British pounds sterling equivalent to Dh110.67, and two mobile phones. As the men were leaving the villa of the British tourist with the latter's bag in tow, the victim's American friend saw them. The American national waited for the robbers to leave then rushed inside the villa where the British tourist stayed. The British tourist then told her American friend what happened who then called the police. The police managed to arrest one of the four thieves who led them to the whereabouts of his other accomplices. The Jordanian defendant will be deported after serving his jail sentence.
