Apple and Google have been given a January 19, 2025 deadline to remove TikTok from their app stores, following a US court ruling that upholds national security concerns. In letters addressed to Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, lawmakers John Moolenaar and Raja Krishnamoorthi emphasized the urgency of compliance with a law requiring TikTok’s divestiture from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. TikTok has yet to meet this requirement, prompting lawmakers to stress the app’s potential risks related to the Chinese Communist Party’s access to user data. The legislation, signed by US President Joe Biden, aims to protect American users and addresses bipartisan concerns over data security and sovereignty. The court’s decision has intensified pressure on TikTok CEO Shou Chew to execute a qualified divestiture immediately. TikTok maintains its operations comply with US laws and has challenged the divestiture order.
