An Arab man has been given the death penalty in Dubai for killing his European ex-girlfriend in the building where she lived. The Dubai Criminal Court found the man guilty of premeditated murder, according to reports on Tuesday (January 16). The case dates back to July 2020. Investigation revealed that the woman had ended their relationship and was seeing another man. Her ex-boyfriend then stalked in her building, and slit her throat in the stairwell. A security guard who heard a commotion on the seventh floor of the building said he saw blood on the stairs and that when he looked further, he found the blood-covered victim on the floor. Police were called to the scene and were able to identify and arrest the victim’s ex-boyfriend near a shopping mall as he tried to flee to another emirate. During police interrogation, the Arab man said he and the victim were in a relationship since 2017, and that they used to travel together. He said that they broke up after he discovered on social media that she was seeing other people. He also said that the victim broke up with him, but that he refused, so she left the country. After two years, he found out from her social media posts that she had returned to Dubai, so he searched for her. He claimed that they reconnected and she asked to borrow Dh55,000 from him and that he lent her only Dh30,000. However, after lending her the money, he allegedly discovered that she was in a relationship with another person. They had an argument, and the victim allegedly told him she will break up with him after returning the money that she borrowed. He told authorities that this triggered him to take revenge on her, so he tracked her down to her apartment. He said that he saw her about to enter her apartment, and that he pulled her away and killed her in the stairs of the building. He then fled in his car, but was spotted by the security guard and another woman. He was arrested while stopping near a mall on his way to another emirate. The Dubai Criminal Court found him guilty of premeditated murder, saying he had prepared a knife, a rope, a hammer, a zip tie self-locking handcuff, a stick and duct tape and monitored her movements prior to the gruesome attack.
