Pakistani tourist stabs fellow national; defendant meted 3-month suspended jail term

  DUBAI – The Dubai Court of First Instance has imposed a three-month suspended jail term on a 34-year-old Pakistani visitor for stabbing a fellow national over a visa matter. Court records showed that on August last year, the defendant asked his 23-year-old countryman who works in Dubai to secure a labour residency visa for him and that the defendant would pay the fellow Pakistani Dh5,300 for it. During a drinking session, the victim asked the Pakistani visitor for the remaining money that was promised him since he was initially paid Dh4,000. But they got into an argument and the defendant stabbed his friend thrice in the stomach. The victim told prosecutors: "He contacted me and gave me Dh4,000 to arrange a UAE residency for him. I gave the money to another person to process the residency but the latter managed to get him (suspect) a visit visa. Once the defendant arrived in Dubai, I asked him to pay me the remaining balance (Dh1,300) but he couldn't. On the day of the incident, I phoned the accused and then met him at his residence in Satwa. We had a heated argument that developed into a fight (and) he stabbed me. I was too drunk to remember how many times he stabbed me." A case was filed against the Pakistani visitor for stabbing his friend. The court convicted the Pakistani visitor but on grounds of leniency, the tribunal imposed a suspended sentence of three months after the defendant secured a waiver from the victim. The court however fined both men Dh1,000 for drinking. The court's ruling is subject to appeal within 15 days after it was handed down yesterday (Wednesday).
