Emirati in trouble for mocking Adnoc attendant

  ABU DHABI – The Public Prosecution of Abu Dhabi Judicial Department has ordered the arrest of an Emirati man who posted a video of himself mocking an Adnoc petrol station attendant whom he paid in coins. Prosecutors on Wednesday said the man's discriminatory behaviour is a crime. In the video, the Emirati is heard saying that petrol prices in the country have increased but that it is not a problem as the UAE provides help to its citizens. He then told the petrol station attendant, “Fill… fill even if it costs Dh500” and later paid the man in coins. “I don’t have of Dh500… count, count,” he said as the attendant counts the coins over a side rack. He then told the man to return the change to him. The video was widely circulated on social media, with many condemning the Emirati for his behaviour. The matter was taken to the public prosecution were the Emirati was found guilty of misusing social media and violating the UAE's anti-discriminatory law. The anti-discrimination law criminalises any form of discrimination on the basis of religion, caste, creed, doctrine, race, colour or ethnic origin. Violators face jail terms ranging from six months to more than 10 years and fines from Dh50,000 to Dh2 million. Following the video, a team from Adnoc visited the petrol station employee to apologise for the Emirati motorist's "negative attitude". Adnoc said the Emirati man's attitude "did not reflect the Emirati values and the fair behaviour with one of its filling station attendant”.
