Attack on Emirati in UK sparks ban on UAE-registered cars

  DUBAI – A ban on Emirati students using UAE-registered vehicles in the UK is in place after an attack on an Emirati student in London last Sunday. UAE's Ambassador to the UK, Sulaiman Al Mazroui, said Emiratis in the UK have a one-week grace period to bring back their UAE-registered vehicles to the UAE. Al Mazroui said the car owners also have the option to change their vehicle's licence plate to a UK-registered one so they can continue using it in the UK. He said that the ban currently covers Emirati students who have been studying in the UK for extended periods, and that it will later on cover other categories. The ambassador said that Emirati students enrolled at UK universities have been informed about the decision. There are more than 3,000 Emiratis studying in the UK and it is not rare for them to take their cars with them to the country. However, Sunday's attack on 31-year-old Emirati student Abdullah Al Hosani in London triggered alarm. Al Hosani was attacked by Adnan Musa, a 24-year-old Iraqi, who sprayed paint on his Mercedes SUV near Knightsbridge. Musa threatened Al Hosani saying “I will kill you”, before spraying the word “War” on his car. A number of other Gulf-owned luxury vehicles were also defaced with spray paint, with slogans of "War" vandalised on them. Police in London have taken necessary actions against Al Hosani's assailant and referred the case to the public prosecution. Musa and other defendants appeared before Westminster Court facing charges of physical assault, racially motivated aggression and possession of drugs. On Saturday, the UAE ambassador advised citizens to be cautious and not to attract untoward attention. “I would like to advise citizens to be careful in some public places”, Al Mazroui said. “The UAE Embassy in the UK places a top priority to maintain the safety of its citizens, who either visit the UK for medical reasons, tourism or students on scholarship,” he said.
