Malacañang, Australia's foreign minister defend gesture

  MANILA – Australian intelligence service chief Nicolas Warner has drawn flak in his country for doing the clenched-fist pose with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte during a meeting in Malacañang on Tuesday. Duterte had used the clenched-fist pose when he ran for the Presidency in last year's general elections and the gesture was his symbol of his vow to fight criminality and the drug abuse menace in the Philippines. His campaign logo was also that of a clenched fist Australian Parliament member Anthony Byrne described the photo as "completely inappropriate for the head of one (of) our most important intelligent services to be in." Warner however is not the first foreign dignitary to do Duterte's signature post. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also did the gesture during a meeting with Duterte in Tokyo last year. Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella and Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop defended Warner's gesture in separate interviews. Abella said: "I was there when the photo was taken. It was done in a lighthearted manner. It wasn't meant to be in any way political. It was just a warming of relationships." Foreign Minister Bishop, for her part, told reporters during a visit in Perth in western Australia that Warner was just complying with a request from Duterte and that the image did not weaken Canberra's criticism of the President's war on drugs. Bishop said she had met with Duterte twice and that "on both occasions...I've raised the issue of human rights and the extrajudicial killings." More than 3,500 drug suspects have been killed in police operations as part of the Duterte administration's anti-drug campaign called Oplan Tokhang (Double-Barrel) while 2,000 others died in other drug-related incidents carried out by vigilantes. Human rights groups believe however that at least 9,000 drug suspects have been killed under Oplan Tokhang without due process.
