Ex-world no. 1 to miss out on the US Open Championships later this month

  WISCONSIN - Former world. no. 1 Victoria Azarenka will not be playing at the US Open later this month because she's "not willing" to leave her eight-month-old son at home in California. Azarenka returned to the sport in June after giving birth to her son, Leo, in December last year. Last July, she and the father of her child separated. The ex-couple are working to "resolve some of the legal processes." In a statement posted on Instagram, Azarenka said: "The way things stand now is that the only way I can play in the US Open this year is if I leave Leo behind in California, which I'm not willing to do. Balancing child care and a career is not easy for any parent, but it is a challenge I am willing to face and embrace." Azarenka is a two-time US Open finalist. "I want to support men and women everywhere who know it is OK to be a working mother -- or father. No one should ever have to decide between a child and their career, we are strong enough to do both." "I look forward to hopefully having positive developments soon so that this difficult situation can be resolved and I can get back to competing." The US Open will run from Aug, 28 to Sept. 10 at Flushing Meadows, New York. Azarenka played at Wimbledon last July but lost to current world no. 2 Simona Halep. She was supposed to play in this week's Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati, Ohio but withdrew from the tournament, citing a family matter.
