Balikbayan boxes, airline tickets from UAE to Philippines VAT-free

  DUBAI - Balikbayan boxes and airline tickets continue to be VAT-free, cargo and travel companies told Expatmedia.net on Tuesday (January 2), a day after a five percent Value Added Tax was rolled out in the UAE. "Sea cargo, air cargo and courier services to the Philippines and non-GCC countries will continue to be VAT-free until further notice," Veronica Rey, LBC Express communications and marketing officer Middle East, told Expatmedia.net. Rey clarified, however, that a 5 percent VAT will be applied to purchases of empty boxes as well as cargo and courier services within the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman.   Dubai-based Flomic Cargo said its services remain VAT-free "until further notice". "So far we haven't implemented any fee increase on our cargo services," said Flomic Cargo representative Karel Mendoza.   On airline tickets, companies said that these will continue to be zero-rated under the UAE's VAT rules. "Those who buy tickets do not need to pay VAT," said Malou Prado, CEO and Managing Director of MPQ Tourism LLC. Prado said that MPQ's visa fees also remain unchanged. She said, however, that other travel related services such as hotel bookings and traveller assistance services or airport meet-and-greet, such as Hala Service, is now subject to a 5 percent VAT.   Prado believes consumer spending for travel services will remain the same post-VAT. "Perhaps it can be a bit of a challenge for those with a tight budget, but for many people, these can be considered necessary expenses, so we all just need to incorporate these into our budget," she said. A flydubai spokesperson confirmed that as per the UAE’s Ministry of Finance, the international transportation industry and related supplies are on the zero-rated list of industries. In a statement, flydubai had said that zero-rated goods and services include ticket fares, on-board products, seat upgrades  and additional baggage. Emirates airline also confirmed that tickets and flight-related services such as extra baggage and cabin upgrades as well as on-board duty-free sales will not be taxed. The airline, however, said its lounge services, tours, inbound holiday packages and airport meet-and-greet services will be subject to VAT. Etihad Airways said it is not charging VAT on airline tickets, lounge access and chauffeur services.
