Ban on Ma Ling, processed meat over African swine fever
MANILA – The popular Ma Ling processed meat product has been temporarily banned in the Philippines as African swine fever virus spread in 16 countries.
The Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has put a temporary ban on the import, distribution and sale of processed pork meat products from countries believed to be affected by the virus.
FDA officer Eric Domingo confirmed that Ma Ling is temporarily banned as a precautionary measure.
In the UAE, Ma Ling is sold in some supermarkets licensed to sell pork items. When contacted by Expat Media, a Dubai Municipality customer service agent did not confirm whether the product will be withdrawn from UAE shelves, but said that the municipality will be sending representatives to check the items on sale.
In the Philippines, the ban has expanded to cover processed pork meat products from Vietnam, Zambia, South Africa, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Mongolia, Moldova and Belgium.
In September last year, the Philippines banned the import and sale of processed pork meat from an initial list of countries including China, Hungary, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Russia and Ukraine. The ban is still in place to ensure that the African swine fever does not affect Philippine livestock, said FDA officer Eric Domingo.
Domingo said that the FDA regulatory board will be inspecting supermarkets and food outlets, and urged the public to report sightings of the banned products to the FDA.
According to the FDA, African swine fever is “highly contagious” to animals and can cause their death, however the virus is not considered a human health threat.
