Ban on recruitment of Filipino domestic workers in UAE to be lifted, says envoy

DUBAI - A ban on the recruitment of new Filipino domestic workers in the UAE will soon be lifted, the new Philippine ambassador to the UAE said. Hjayceelyn Quintana said the Philippine government will soon make an announcement on the decision. Quintana was speaking on the sidelines of the Filipino Community Leadership Summit in Abu Dhabi on Friday. She said that a delegate from the Philippine labour department will visit the UAE next week for discussions that include the issue of domestic workers. The consultation meeting with UAE officials will cover issues of Filipino workers in the UAE, Quintana said. In recent years, the Philippines has effectively implemented a ban on Filipinos coming to work as household workers in the UAE. Authorities have refused to stamp new contracts to protect Filipinos against illegal recruitment and abuse, but some nationals still continue to travel to the UAE on visit visas to find work. Last year, Saqr bin Ghobash Saeed Ghobash, Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation, and Silvestre Bello, secretary of the Philippines department of labour, signed an understanding on mutual cooperation in the recruitment and employment of domestic workers.
