Bank loan scam: 2 Pakistanis, Filipino in court over $10m bribe

  DUBAI – Two Pakistani men and a Filipino man are on trial for allegedly accepting $10 million in bribes to forge HSBC documents used for loan applications. At the Dubai Criminal Court, prosecutors said that the Pakistanis, aged 26 and 33, and the Filipino, 35, forged 15 credit and bank guarantees for a Nigerian man so that he could use them to apply for bank loans. Prosecutors said that the forgeries made by the bank employees happened between June and November 2015. The Nigerian is currently at large. HSBC’s head of internal investigations testified that the trio issued the Nigerian certificates with bank letterheads and official stamps that they emailed to him before destroying the original documents. The incident came to light after an HSBC branch in South Africa sent an email to the HSBC branch on Sheikh Zayed Road to verify the validity of one of the letters submitted to them as part of a loan application. “The email was sent to our SZR branch and, when doubled checked by the employee there, it was discovered that the letter was a forgery,” the Egyptian investigations chief testified. HSBC’s internal investigation revealed that the names and data on the letters were false and that the fake documents were sent to the Nigerian man’s contacts in his country and in South Africa to apply for bank loans.
