Bank in UAE to pay Dh159,000 to customer over high credit card interest

A bank in the UAE has been ordered to pay Dh159,000 to its customer after the court ruled that the bank charged her a very high interest rate on her credit card. The Abu Dhabi Civil Court of Appeal upheld an earlier ruling by the Court of First Instance on the case. In her lawsuit, the woman said that her credit card with the bank only had a credit limit of Dh46,000 and that she was not given a card account statement since she started using the credit card 10 years ago. She claimed that she made payment deposits for purchases on the credit card, but that the bank charged her Dh270,000 even though she only used Dh123,000. The bank also charged her interest and fines amounting to Dh170,000. The woman’s lawyer demanded that the bank pay his client damages amounting to Dh159,000 and to return the guarantee cheque to his client and provide her with a credit card clearance. The Court of First Instance ruled in the woman’s favor. The bank appealed the ruling, arguing that the case be dismissed due to the lapse of time set for its hearing. The appeals court rejected the appeal and upheld the verdict of the lower court based on evidence presented by the report of a court-appointed banking expert. ICA/Expat Media
