How to barbecue near Al Qudra Lake without being fined Dh500

DUBAI - After signs were installed in Al Qudra Lake earlier this month to alert the public of do's and dont's in the  area, the Dubai Municipality has issued a clarification on doing barbecues in the area. The new signboards put up around Al Qudra Lake alert visitors that camping, barbecuing and dog walking are banned in the area. The Dubai Municipality said that a Dh500 fine will be given to anyone caught littering the area or creating bonfires. Other banned activities in the wildlife reserve include hunting, swimming, fishing, cutting or removing plants, entry of vehicles, cooking and feeding the animals. On Thursday, however, a Dubai Municipality official clarified that people can still do barbecues in the area, but within limits. Abdul Majeed Abdul Aziz Al Saifaie, director of the municipality's Waste Management Department, said visitors can still start a barbecue near Al Qudra Lake as long as they use a barbecue stand and provided that they do not start fires directly on the sand. There are currently no designated barbecue stations in Al Qudra Lake but visitors can bring their own barbecue stand or barbecue pans. Al Saifaie said that anyone caught littering the area or damaging the environment will be fined Dh500 or more, "depending on the damage you do". He said that laws were enforced after municipality workers were increasingly cleaning up after campers. He added that leaving charcoal, charred wood or any waste on the sand is a safety risk to both humans and wildlife in the area. In Abu Dhabi, visitors are free to cook barbecues in public parks, but have to do so in designated stations for barbecues. Anyone caught flouting the rules will be fined Dh1,000, according to the Abu Dhabi City Municipality. GAD/Expat Media
