Bella Hadid apologises for offending UAE, Saudi fans
DUBAI – Supermodel Bella Hadid has apologized over a selfie posted on her Instagram account that some of her fans said was disrespectful.
The photo showed the 22-year-old with her foot against an airport window. In the background, airplanes bearing the flags of the UAE and Saudi Arabia sit on the tarmac.
Hadid said it was an “honest mistake”. She uploaded the photo on her Instagram Stories on Monday. She has since deleted the photo.
Fans took to social media to criticize the supermodel, saying that the positioning of her foot was disrespectful. Some have called for a boycott of her advertising campaigns.
In Arab culture, displaying the soles of the feet is perceived as an insult because the feet, especially the soles, are often seen as unclean.
Hadid, who has 24 millions fans on Instagram alone, has issued an apology on her social media channels, saying that her actions had “nothing to do with politics”.
"I would never want my posts or platform to be used for hate against anyone, especially those of my own beautiful and powerful heritage," she wrote. "I love and care so much about the Muslim and Arab side of my family, as well as my brothers and sisters throughout the world,” she said.
The supermodel said she only had good things to say about the UAE and Saudi Arabia and was not aware of the planes in the background.
“This was an honest mistake on an early morning... never, ever would I intentionally try to offend anyone like that. I am so sorry,” she said.
“I have never and will never be the one to talk down on these countries.. Only to spread love, and the true beauty of them, as the way I was taught by my Teta and my father. To feel as if I have disappointed you is what hurts me the most,” she said.
The supermodel promised fans she would be “more responsible when bringing awareness to all causes, including my beloved Middle Eastern community.”
