Beware of beggars, Sharjah police warn

  SHARJAH – Begging is turning into a lucrative activity for several people and sometimes even criminal gangs are involved, the Sharjah Police said, warning the public to be cautious. “Some beggars pretend they are handicapped, or have a life-threatening disease,” said Colonel Ebrahim Al Ajel, director of the Criminal and Investigation Department of Sharjah Police. Al Ajel said that some beggars will also show fake documents to raise donations for the construction of a mosque or orphanage in their home country. Police also found that organised gangs bring beggars to the country, particularly during Ramadan when people have a stronger tendency to be charitable. People are advised to report beggars to the Sharjah Police on 065623322. More than 300 illegal residents, including beggars, have been arrested in Sharjah in an ongoing police campaign. Al Ajel said the police campaign during Ramadan will focus on areas near malls, markets, mosques, commercial and residential areas.
