Dubai cracks down on bicycle riders

  DUBAI – In the latest campaign to reduce the number of accidents involving bicycle riders, the Dubai Police said it has confiscated 225 bicycles in one week. The bicycles belonged to people who used them on streets and highways with speed limits of more than 60km per hour. According to the Dubai Police, people were caught riding bicycles on key roads such as the busy Sheikh Zayed Road and other highways. Bicycles were involved in more than 17 traffic accidents in Dubai that left 18 people injured during the first six months of 2017, according to police. Police said that the bicycle riders were seen on highways, causing confusion to drivers because there are no designated bicycle lanes on those roads. The police called on bicycle riders to adhere to traffic safety rules and to wear helmets and a reflective vest. Bicycles must also be fitted with a headlight and a rear light. DAJ/Expat Media
