Binladin selling assets to pay salaries and debts as troubled firm faces workers' protests
JEDDAH – Troubled firm Saudi Binladin Group is reportedly planning to sell some of its property and assets to pay off debts.
The company is facing workers’ protests over non-payment of salaries and end-of-service dues. Some workers claimed they had not been paid for six months.
Security forces had to disperse a large crowd of protesters outside the company headquarters. Police also sealed off the Al Hamadinia neighbourhood, north of Jeddah.
The company reportedly has projects worth 490 billion riyals, but projects worth 248 billion riyals are in jeopardy. The Saudi royal court last year suspended the Binladin construction group from undertaking any future projects following a deadly crane collapse at their project site in Makkah. The ban has since been lifted.
Ali Al Ghamdi, an employee of the company, said the group’s management should have worked more seriously to solve the crisis after the royal decree, Arab News reported.
Al Ghamdi said that the company had received a loan of 2.5 billion riyals from Saudi British Bank and National Arab Bank, which it should have used to cover its expenses.
Meanwhile, Binladin spokesman Yaseen Al Attas said the company is committed to paying employees and finishing contracted projects on time.
