Official admits initially keeping report of poultry deaths in Nueva Ecija

  MANILA – Poultry in two towns in another Philippine province have been hit by avian flu, Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol revealed on Friday. Piñol said two cases of bird flu were confirmed in the towns of Jaen and San Isidro in Nueva Ecija province by the Bureau of Animal Industry(BAI) after tests by the Animal Diseases Detection Laboratory were conducted on specimens gathered from quails and layer chickens. Nueva Ecija is situated close to the province of Pampanga where an avian flu outbreak had been reported last week. The government culled thousands of poultry in San Luis town in Pampanga in an effort to stop the spread of the avian disease. This as Piñol admitted in a Philippine Star interview on Friday that he did not disclose reports he received last week of chicken deaths in Nueva Ecija due to the avian flu in order not to alarm the public. Piñol said: "We actually did not want to create another cause of fear. We wanted to confine the attention to San Luis in Pampanga only. But it already came out so we can't do anything about it." When Piñol was interviewed on Thursday afternoon, he was asked if there were other areas where the bird flu virus may have spread but he said the outbreak is still confined in San Luis town. Meanwhile, Piñol said quarantine teams have been established in Nueva Ecija even before the laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the avian virus among poultry there. According to reports, the farm in Jaen raised quails while the farm in San Isidro is a layer facility of about 20,000 chickens. Like what was done in Pampanga, the agriculture department implemented a one-kilometer contained radius and a seven-kilometer controlled radius around the affected Nueva Ecija farms and culling operations of 300,000 fowls within the one-kilometer radius are ongoing.
