Naturalized player expresses security concerns for hesitation

  MANILA – Andray Blatche is not keen on playing for Gilas Pilipinas when the Philippine team goes to Beirut next month for the FIBA Asia Cup due to security concerns, sources told Philippine media. Sports website Spin.ph, the Philippine Daily Inquirer and Manila Bulletin cited sources as saying that the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and Gilas officials are trying to convince the naturalized player to play for Gilas at the Lebanon tournament that will kick off on Aug. 8 and run until Aug. 20. Aside from the FIBA Asia Cup, negotiations are ongoing with the Blatche camp for Andray's participation in the home-and-away qualifiers for the 2019 World Cup in China. The sources said the negotiations with Blatche are going nowhere and that Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes was set to submit yesterday (Tuesday) the Philippine team's 12-man roster for the FIBA Asia cup. Blatche, a former NBA player, last played for Gilas at the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) championships held in Manila in May wherein the Philippines emerged as champion and earned the right to represent the sub-zone in Lebanon. Blatche is currently in the US where his wife and son live. Aside from Gilas, Blatche is also a player of the Xinjiang Flying Tigers of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). If Blatche stands his ground, Gilas will field Filipino-German Christian Standhardinger, who played for Gilas at the recently-concluded Jones Cup in Taipei. Standhardinger had been cleared by FIBA to compete as a naturalized player of Gilas. Christian, who was born in Munich, has a Filipino mother but failed to secure a Philippine passport before turning 16 so he wasn't eligible to play as a homegrown player under Fiba's stringent rules. Standhardinger is going to join the national team that will compete at the Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur next month and may be forced to play in Beirut as well as Blatche's replacement.
