Boy behind viral letter to Duterte has a message about Philippines

  DUBAI – The 11-year-old boy from Fresno, California who caused a social media frenzy with his heartfelt letter that got the attention of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is back with another message. “I want to tell the world that the Philippines is a beautiful country. It’s got awesome places to visit, yummy food and the people there are very nice,” Andre Gabriel Custodio Esteban told Expatmedia.net.
Esteban has high hopes for the Philippines under Duterte’s anti-drug campaign, saying that he supports the “hardworking president”. “I see Philippines as a safer, drug-free country. It’s going to be richer and I see myself living there with my family,” he said. Esteban said that he has visited the country four times, and has been to several places including Mindoro where his mother is from, his father’s place in Isabela, and his grandfather’s farm. “I visited Jollibee a lot… explored the Philippines like going to the beach. I also visited the Mangyans in the mountains,” he said. Although Esteban, his parents and his elder sister Miya are based in the US, it is still easy for them to connect to their Filipino roots, he said. So when his Social Studies teacher told his class about getting extra credit for “bringing anything from our country”, he grabbed a pen and paper and started writing. “I drafted my letter two times before I wrote the final one,” he said, adding that he got the idea from his teacher’s story about a child who wrote a letter to his consulate and got a box of goodies. “I was surprised because I didn’t think it would happen,” he said, describing his reaction when his letter received a personal response from Duterte. “I think he’s very kind and thoughtful that he would take his time out of his busy schedule to make a video to a kid. It shows that he is very caring,” he opined. How has his life changed after that incident? “I got interviewed by news people and people tell me that they saw me on TV,” he said, although he admitted that he is still the same 11-year-old boy who reads books, plays basketball, football or the ukelele. His mother, Almyra Grace Custodio Esteban, 41, said the younger Esteban remains a “sweet, caring and responsible” boy. She describes Esteban as a self-motivating achiever who likes to get straight A’s in school and even taught himself how to play the ukulele. The boy has skills in the kitchen too, Mrs. Esteban said. “He likes to cook and bake. He also does his own laundry. On Sundays, he wakes up early to cook breakfast for us,” she told Expatmedia.net.
