Remarkable new procedure done on Pakistani crane operator who was losing vision due to brain tumor

  DUBAI – An extraordinary surgical procedure was performed in Thumbay hospital here last September wherein a brain tumor was removed through the nostrils of a Pakistani patient. The patient, identified as Mehnaj Khan, 34, married, working as a crane operator and a father of five children, underwent stitch-less endoscopic trans-sphenoidal surgery last September that involved the removal of a brain tumor through the nose. A spokesperson of Thumbay Hospital said Khan has fully recovered since the surgery and his vision has improved. Khan and the hospital thanked the hospital and the doctors involved in the surgery done on him. It was learned that Khan's eyesight first began to dim at the right eye then at the left eye. He also experienced headache frequently for two years. This prompted him to consult an ophthalmologist but the eye doctor saw nothing wrong. He was referred to Thumbay Hospital to undergo MRI scan that showed a tumor in the pituary gland that was pressing on the optic apparatus of his brain and the hypothalamus. The tumor was also pressing on his optic nerves, which was why Khan was losing his vision in both eyes. Thumbay Hospital neurosurgeon Chandra Premsagar said in endoscopic trans-sphenoidal surgery normally require surgeons to open the skull and incisions are made on the face but in Khan's face, the tumor was removed though suction via his nose. It was not known how many hours did the procedure take. The surgery was planned out with an ear nose and throat surgeon and an eye surgeon in order to restore Khan's vision.
