Cannes winner slated to direct soap opera also about Philippines drug problem

  MANILA – Cannes winner Brillante Mendoza has made the jump from the big screen to the small screen as he directs a series of independent movies made for television on TV5 network. The undertaking is part of TV5's vision to make the network the "home of indies". To recall, Mendoza won the Cannes best director award in 2009 for his independent film "Kinatay". Mendoza's first project "Brillante Ma Mandoza Presents" came out early this month. "Tsinoy" starred actress Ina Raymundo and was shot in Binondo – Manila's Chinatown. It focused on the Filipino-Chinese community and the episode takes place during the Chinese New Year. The second episode is "Everlasting" and will be shown next month. It stars Aubrey Miles and Mercedes Cabral, who play a lesbian couple, celebrating their ninth anniversary in Baguio City during the world-famous Panagbenga flower festival. The third episode will take place at the Philippine High School for the Arts located at the foot of Makiling mountain in Laguna. Mendoza will also come out with a unique soap opera entitled "Amo", which will be about the drug problem in the country as seen by different people. ""We will venture into the drug world and meet various characters: from the cops to the peddlers, from small-time distributors to the so-called big fish," said Mendoza. Meanwhile, Mendoza said his collaboration with TV5 does not run in conflict with his involvement with another TV company, Solar Entertainment of businessman Wilson Tieng. Mendoza and the Tieng-owned company organizes the Sinag independent film festival. "Solar is also part of the TV5 projects," he explained. "It will release the films I will make for TV5 in theaters," said Meendoza in an interview.
