Britain’s King Charles III was crowned at the Westminster Abbey on Saturday (May 6) in a coronation ceremony that also saw Queen Consort Camilla crowned. The coronation, attended by dignitaries from around the world, drew thousands of people in London. People wearing red, white and blue, the colours of the British flag lined the streets of London to cheer King Charles and Queen Camilla. The royal couple arrived at their coronation in the Diamond Jubilee Coach. It is Britain’s first coronation in 70 years, and the second in history to be televised. Queen Elizabeth II was the last British monarch to be crowned. The 74-year-old Charles became king the moment his mother died last September. King Charles, formerly known as The Prince of Wales, was born in 1948 and became heir apparent on the accession of Queen Elizabeth II in 1952. King Charles turned to each of the four points of the compass before The Archbishop of Canterbury proclaimed him the “undoubted King”. The congregation then shouted, “God Save King Charles!” King Charles is the 40th reigning monarch to be crowned since King William I in 1066.
