UK defiant after assault as city is 'shocked, enraged' by incident
LONDON, England - The British police yesterday identified a British man, Khalid Masood, as the perpetrator of the terror attack near the UK Parliament building, resulting in the deaths of four persons including an unarmed police officer, and injuries to scores of others.
Authorities have made several arrests in Birmingham and London in connection with the attack.
Prime Minister Theresa May said the British government and people will not be cowed by the attack.
Amaq, a news agency affiliated with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), tweeted that the terror group claimed responsibility for the assault and that the attacker, whom ISIS did not identify, was a "soldier" inspired by the group's message. The terror group did not provide proof of a direct link with the assailant.
May said in an address to the British House of Commons that Masood was once linked to violent extremism and was inspired by Islamist ideology.
The police, for their part, said Masood had previous convictions for violence and the last one was in 2003 for possession of a knife. Masood has not been convicted of any terrorism offense.
May said Masood "was not part of the intelligence picture".
Masood drove his car up the Westminster Bridge then plowed through people on the span, killing two persons and injuring scores of others. In the chaos, a woman fell into the Thames River.
Masood crashed his vehicle into a railing outside the Parliament building, ran into the Parliament compound and then stabbed police officer Keith Palmer, who later succumbed to his stab wounds.
Aside from Palmer, the other fatalities were American national Kurt Cochran and Aysha Frade, a British woman of Spanish ancestry. They were among the people on the bridge. An unidentified fourth victim died in a hospital.
Forty people including French, South Korean and American nationals were injured when Masood plowed through them on Westminster Bridge. Twenty-nine required hospital treatment while three others are currently confined and in critical condition.
A defiant May told the House of Commons, "Yesterday an act of terrorism tried to silence our democracy. But today we meet as normal -- as generations have done before us, and as future generations will continue to do -- to deliver a simple message: we are not afraid. And our resolve will never waver in the face of terrorism."
"And we meet here, in the oldest of all Parliaments, because we know that democracy -- and the values it entails -- will always prevail."
She also paid tribute to Palmer in her speech.
Meanwhile, London Mayor Sadiq Khan led a vigil at Trafalgar Square, near the scene of the attack. City residents remained shocked and enraged by the attack.
Queen Elizabeth II sent her "thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathy" for all those affected.
