New tuition rates to take effect in academic year 2017-2018

  DUBAI – British-curriculum schools in Dubai will increase their tuition by as much as 4.8 percent in school year 2017-2018. The planned move came after the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) said last Sunday that schools categorized as "outstanding" can raise their school fees. Ten of the 16 "outstanding" educational institutions are UK schools operating in the emirate, records showed. The KHDA's statement came after the Dubai Statistics Center lowered the Education Cost Index (ECI) from 3.21 percent to 2.4 percent. KHDA's rules stipulate that "outstanding" schools can apply for permission to impose a maximum increase in their tuition rates, equivalent to double the ECI, while "very good" schools are eligible for a tuition increase up to 1.75 percent of the ECI. "Good" schools can apply for tuition increase of 1.5 percent of the ECI while schools deemed "satisfactory", "weak" and "very weak" are allowed to increase their tuition equivalent to the ECI. Of the 149 schools assessed by the KHDA, 16 are "outstanding", 13 are "very good", 57 "good", 56 "acceptable" and seven are "weak".
