The Burj Al Arab, one of Dubai’s most iconic landmarks, celebrates 25 years of redefining luxury  this December. Since its grand opening on December 1, 1999, the sail-shaped hotel has stood as a symbol of Dubai’s ambition and innovation, attracting global attention and redefining the standards of opulence in the hospitality industry. Operated by Jumeirah Group, the Burj Al Arab is known as the world’s first "seven-star" hotel—a title that emerged when a journalist felt its grandeur exceeded traditional five-star ratings. Architect Tom Wright of WS Atkins designed the structure to resemble a billowing Arabian dhow sail, honoring Dubai's maritime heritage. Built on a man-made island 280 meters off the city’s coast, the hotel stands at 321 meters tall, housing the world’s tallest atrium, ascending over 180 meters. “From the moment guests arrive, they are enveloped in an experience that blends Arabian hospitality with cutting-edge design,” said Thomas Meier, Chief Operating Officer of Jumeirah Group. He added, “As we celebrate 25 years, we reflect on our legacy of creating exceptional destinations while looking forward to future growth.” The Burj Al Arab’s interior, designed by Chinese designer Khuan Chew, features a vibrant palette, statuario marble used by Michelangelo, and 1,790 square meters of 24-karat gold leaf. “Every corner of the hotel tells a story of meticulous craftsmanship and luxury,” noted Chew in a previous interview. Over the years, the hotel has hosted celebrities, royalty, and global leaders, reinforcing its reputation as a premier destination. With exclusive experiences like dining in its underwater Al Mahara restaurant and helicopter transfers, the Burj Al Arab remains a global benchmark for extravagance. Marking this milestone, the Jumeirah Group plans sustainable expansions, including new properties in Saudi Arabia and Switzerland. “Our future is about creating spaces that connect people culturally and socially while maintaining our commitment to luxury,” Meier said.
