Burj Khalifa lights up with Philippine flag on June 12

DUBAI – The world’s tallest tower, Burj Khalifa, will be marking Philippine Independence Day on Friday (June 12) with a special LED show displaying the Philippine flag. The LED display on the iconic tower is expected to start at 9:15pm. (June 12 update) Watch the live footage:
“Together, let us thank the UAE for honouring the Philippines and the Filipinos on our National Day,” Philippine Ambassador Hjayceelyn Quintana said. The Filipino Social Club, a Filipino group licensed by the Community Development Authority, welcomed the gesture as a show of solidarity to Filipinos and UAE residents affected by the coronavirus pandemic. "The pandemic won't shatter the bayanihan spirit in us and together we rise," according to the Filipino Social Club. This would be the second time that the Burj Khalifa would mark Philippine Independence Day with a LED display. Last year, thousands of Filipinos gathered at the base of the tower as the popular landmark put out a spectacular show to mark Philippine Independence Day. Crowds cheered as the Philippine flag flashed for the first time on the façade of the world’s tallest tower. Mobile phones went up in the air as the tri-color display took over the Burj Khalifa for more than a minute. Watch last year's LED display on the Burj Khalifa:

Last year's show at DFC

At the Dubai Festival City (DFC) last year, Philippine pride was at an all-time high as the entertainment venue prepared a lively light and sound show that started with the Philippine flag projected onto the DFC building as the Philippine national anthem played. This was followed by a light and music show that flashed scenes from the Philippines and featured landmarks and icons such as the rice terraces and the jeepney. The image of the Philippine sun also floated above the water canal as part of DFC’s Imagine laser show. It appears there won't be a similar tribute on DFC this year. A DFC customer service representative told Expatmedia.net on Wednesday (June 10) that there was no scheduled show for Philippine Independence Day and that due to the coronavirus pandemic, the mall will not be holding any entertainment events.
