The world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, illuminated in the colours of the Philippine flag on Thursday (June 12) to celebrate the 127th anniversary of Philippine Independence Day. The tribute began at 7:50pm with a projection of the UAE's space mission before transitioning into a dazzling LED display of the Philippine flag on the tower's iconic façade. The moment was met with cheers from a crowd of Filipinos gathered near the Dubai Fountain area, which has been undergoing renovations and was partially cordoned off. Philippine Ambassador to the UAE Alfonso Ferdinand Ver and members of the Filipino Social Club were among those who joined the crowd. Expat Media’s live broadcast of the light show attracted over 1 million views and nearly 4,000 shares within hours of the event, highlighting the strong community support and emotional significance of the gesture. Watch it below: Since 2019, the Burj Khalifa has celebrated Philippine Independence Day annually, symbolizing the deep friendship between the UAE and the Philippines. This year’s celebrations have included major community events, including Kalayaan 2025 on June 1 at Dubai World Trade Centre, which drew more than 40,000 attendees and featured Filipino stars Julia Barretto, MJ Cayabyab, Kai Montinola, and Jarren Garcia. Another event followed in Al Ain on June 7, and another large-scale gathering is set for June 14 at DWTC, with actor Enrique Gil headlining the festivities. The Philippines commemorates its independence every June 12, marking its 1898 declaration of freedom from over 300 years of Spanish colonial rule. ICA/Expat Media
