Burj Khalifa, UAE buildings light up for Wuhan
DUBAI – The UAE showed solidarity with China on Sunday (February 2) with iconic buildings like the Burj Khalifa displaying a message of support for Wuhan over the coronavirus outbreak. The Chinese city of Wuhan is considered the epicenter of the coronavirus that has killed more than 300 people and infected nearly 10,000 others, including five in the UAE. At past 7pm, the Burj Khalifa displayed an image of the UAE and China flags in a circle, with the words Wuhan Jiayou (Wuhan, stay strong) at the centre. The display of support came shortly after the iconic tower displayed a moving LED tribute to NBA legend Kobe Bryant and daughter Gianna, who both died in a helicopter crash last week. The Wuhan Jiayou message also flashed on the LED screens of Citywalk in Dubai. In Abu Dhabi, the ADNOC Headquarters lit up in the colours of the Chinese national flag. Other landmark buildings emblazoned with the Chinese national flag included the Capital Gate, the Abu Dhabi Global Market, the Emirates Palace and Sheikh Zayed Bridge in Abu Dhabi, Burj Al Arab in Dubai and Hazza bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain. The initiative is part of the strong solidarity shown by the UAE, under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The UAE has expressed confidence that China will be able to contain and control the spread of new coronavirus. Meanwhile, UAE residents praised the country’s humanistic approach to tackling the coronavirus outbreak. “UAE flight to China is normal as authorities will not close the doors to our Chinese people. We are a tolerant and welcoming people here in UAE,” long-time Dubai resident and local airline employee Ronald Awa told Expatmedia.net.
