Burning chips in UAE: what's the real deal?   DUBAI - A video clip has recently circulated on social media about burning potato chips, purportedly to show that the product is toxic, and the Dubai Municipality has come out to set the record straight. The municipality issued a clarification, saying that oils, salt and carbohydrates in dried potato chips help make them burn quicker, but it does not mean that the product contains chemicals that are toxic to humans. "Burning and flaming of potato chips is a natural reaction of the combustion of carbohydrates, oils and salt contained in the product, and does not indicate that the product contains chemicals that affect consumer's safety," the Dubai Municipality said. "Consumers should not doubt the safety of food products, as regulatory authorities take all necessary procedures to ensure food safety at all stages of manufacturing, and Dubai Municipality sends all food products for sampling and laboratory testing," the municipality added. On YouTube, videos of people using potato chips as a substitute for kindling or tinder are commonplace, with campers saying that chips are handy when starting a campfire.
